Major scientific advances have been made since the initial edition of the Handbook of Human Immunology was published in 1997, contributing directly to a better knowledge of the intricacies of the human immune system in health and illness. Several novel elements of the immune system have been disclosed, along with new means for measuring and evaluating them, either as a consequence of the sequencing of the whole human genome or of technical improvements.
